The Leak

The Satanic Satanist album leak

I am not going to start into this with my (now yearly) standard of proclaiming my support for downloading. I have done it too many times and it has typically become simply the preface to the message. The message that seems to get lost by the point the reader reaches the end of the sentence “We fully support downloading…”. There is more. If you are interested in the point of this piece then please read on. I know it is scary to read through something that will begin with “This is in no way an attack on you, the downloader” but, that is just how it starts…

Remember When?

This is in no way an attack on you, the downloader, but it is a note that I have taken and I wish to share. I realized something in the past few weeks. It took the festivals Bonnaroo and Hurricane and Southside to come to the point of this writing that begins at the point. I realized something about myself and my friends in this band as we looked through the lists of bands playing these festivals. I know relatively all the names of all the artists on the bill. I literally have or have had ALL of them on my ipod. Every “buzz” or “hype” band and most of them I don’t even remember how I got them but, somehow, I have them. One thing I can’t tell you about them is what album “that one song is on” or even for that matter the title of “that one song”. Honestly I can’t tell you if they even play “that one song”. Well, there were a handful of these artists that I do know, which I will list here: The Beastie Boys, Tool, Nine Inch Nails, The Pixies, and Faith No More… I will also include in here Moby for simple fact that I walked past his stage multiple times and each time I thought to myself “Oh hey, I know this!” I mention these bands (and will mention a few more current) because they are bands whose albums I owned, albums I waited for and albums I WORE OUT. Really, played them to extinction. They are groups that I was a part of. Do you remember the anticipation building as release date neared? Do you remember tearing open the package and putting that album on? Do you remember the fact that that album did not leave the stereo, the car, the walkman, the discman etc… until you had listened through from start to finish (often multiple times). Do you remember showing up at your record store late for the initial rush and finding that your album was sold out!? (maybe only in Alaska)  Do you also remember checking in daily on the hope that a truck had been delayed in the days before and somehow your record would arrive randomly throughout the following days, completely bypassing the system of release and shipments? I do. I remember these bands. I remember being a part of something bigger. I remember how these things felt. I did it for bands I didn’t know, bands who I had not heard before but only read an advance review of. And sometimes, sometimes it was completely random, just for the sake of getting new music. As I watched Jason run out into the dark, the cold and the pouring rain towards the Faith No More set happening two stages away I thought about this. What is drawing him out into this mess? The only answer I could find was “The Album”. It was the memories that came along with the album. It was the endless plays it got throughout his high school years. It was the work that went into the purchase of this album. He was a part of this and despite all of us wanting to get out of the rain and start our 4 hour drive we could not deny him this. We all knew how he felt and we all knew that there was no stopping it. Where else would he get a chance to see this with our tour schedule and lack of stability that a home and a job holds. We would not stop him and we would deal with the end of festival traffic and the cold and wet would eventually dry away. There is a reason bands like Blur and Faith No More and Moby are playing to the massive audiences they are and the bands of now are playing to half interested crowds of people who know they are supposed to be here but aren’t quite sure why they are here and they kinda know some of the words to some of the songs and who shortly need to move on to the next show that they hear they are supposed to be into. I watched this and felt a teensy bit sad inside.

Downloading.

I hope this is not a tough read and I apologize if it is but there is a message to all of it… My favorite bands today are album bands. Bands whose records, had I downloaded prior or not, I purchased. The albums that became a part of me through my becoming a part of the album. Bands like Grizzly Bear, Santi(o)gold, Lykke Li, The Knife, Fever Ray, Menomena, The Builders and the Butchers and so on and so on (sorry if I forgot some good ones but I am in the middle of finishing a thought that even this little side note is interrupting these are great bands though. Please buy these albums!)… Here is something to think about. Grizzly Bear just put out a new record with the backing of A Radiohead tour a Feist Tour, a TV On The Radio tour, all the buzz and hype you  could throw at one group without it’s implosion resulting, and more TV performances than I have ever seen one band take on (and own! Good work guys!). Number 8 on the charts and 33k sold. Imagine what that could have been had we all lived up to the release date and the saving? If we had all been a part of it. It should have been number 1, or at least top 5. You would have Grizzly Bear, a band who we played with at the birth of our band, a band that has been working towards this goal and taking all the right steps, at the top of every radio playlist. You would be opening up the door to relevant new music. You would be pumping new life into something you believe in. Music. In doing this we would all be a part of it. We would be a part of a movement. The times of the “evil” music Industry are over and the people behind it are all hiding out, losing their hold. You are no longer keeping money from their hands but of the artists behind your favorite songs and albums. The Labels no longer have the power of weighted deals, they bend in our favor now, or better yet (in our place) completely fair. Less people buying records equals less money behind promotion, equals less money behind its release, equals less money behind the tour, equals less opportunities to see your favorite bands. This is coming as a music fan mind you. I am not begging not pleading, simply stating the facts. It is hard for bands like us to do this without help. That is why it is so important to buy music. It doesn’t matter how you get it, from the label, from us on tour, from Amazon, or Itunes. We have put a lot of work into this and want to share it with you. Lets be a part of something again. Example: Our manager just went to the Wilco show last night on a free ticket handed to him by a friend. He and his wife bought seventy dollars in merchandise from their favorite… favorite? God I am so jealous right now…. band. It all comes around. I always need to be fair as I find the end of these points and state this: I download music early. It is a great advance to the purchase. It is an early taste. It is an amazing treat for the fan. BUT. If you like these albums and these bands please buy the record. It means so much more…. AND if we or any other band makes the mistake of making a record that you absolutely hate. Well, don’t buy it. Don’t waste your money…. ANNNNNNNNNND that being said. My favorite albums have been growers. Just have a bit of patience with all of us artists. Its not always the easy listen right away.

The Band.

This is not meant to be depressing (wow, another killer way to start a paragraph) but there are some things you need to know about this band. This I am sure is not only relatable to ours but to other over your favorite bands as well. This is relevant to anyone who does what they love. This is for your understanding in what that local corner store, local shops, local construction builders… Here is a quick nod from my childhood. We built hotels throughout Alaska for a major tourism company. When we would go into small towns they would try to push young foreign and out of state labor into the building to save money and my dad fought every bit of it to spend local and hire local while he was working. He understood what he went through in starting his business and he understood what community is about. This is a community as is the tupperware group your mom goes to. As is the sandwich shop that we eat at between work. I am only writing this so you can understand the amount of work that goes into living for your love. Those of you with parents who run their own business and those of you who have their own will understand that I speak for you as well. It is something that gets lost and I feel it is time that you know these things. It is not about money but about what we do for what we love. If we all just worked together and pitched in a little bit then we could do something bigger than all this.

I sleep on a hard wood floor in the house of people I did not know before Ryan’s joining of this band. I sleep on this floor with Ryan and Ian, our tour manager. Our tour manager sleeps on this floor with us because he will not let us pay him when we cannot pay ourselves. Jason sleeps in the basement of The Builders and The Butchers for random rent payments while he is home and Zach stays in the guest room at his ex-girlfriends and her new boyfriends place for 75 dollars a month. Our manager has worked endless hours for the past four years with little to no payment. Really, we call him on weekends. He is working right now and was working until late last night, I know… I talked to him. Austin Sellers is in my opinion one of the best artists in Portland and has done posters from Berbatis to The Doug Fir to Holocene and AMAZING ones at that. He and I have spent countless hours together and apart on this album artwork present and past for little to no pay. Ryan Rothermal and Mike Ragen and Robbie Johnston worked for two days straight on our music video not to mention days of post work and editing and went out of their own pocket to make a music video that we could all be happy with as artists… OK, this is getting overly “artsy” but it is the only word I gots without sounding like a douche. Nothing worse than a douchey artist.. We play music because we love it and nothing will change that ever. We tour because we love it and not because of money. If I wanted money I would have stayed in Alaska and worked construction rather than starve for this. Rather than fight through three dollar meals and countless nights sleeping in the van. The point we are at now is so far from where we have come and yet still so far from a standard of living. Remember that “homeless” story from “Waiter: You Vultures”. An odd choice of talking points. All of us do it. All of us who believe in it.  All of us are still living it.

The Leak.

I had mixed feelings when I hear the album had leaked. On one hand it was exciting to think that people were actually searching so hard in advance (We have never had an album leak more than two weeks in advance of release date). On the other hand I was somewhat frustrated, not in an angry way. Just looking back at our history of touring and shows gradually getting bigger and bigger but still watching sales drop from our low thousands to the lower thousands. It was more frustrating to hear how it leaked seeing as how all the links we had sent out were private and coded. There is a certain level of professionalism that has been lost along with the idea that is the album. To hear about these things happening from the people that should understand music as much as any musician is just heartbreaking. I am happy vinyl is coming back, it needs to. We need to have albums and music. I need to.

We love being a part of this. We need to believe in something again. Thank you for everything

Love

John

  1. John I hope you know how much we as fans appreciate all the hardwork ya’ll put in. I’ve bought every album ya’ll have ever put out even though I never listen to anything on CD anymore. I’ve never been so excited for album in my entire life. I remember skipping school on Tuesdays just so I could go to the record store and get what I was waiting for. You and your band reminds me of everything I love about music. I wish you all the best of luck and you deserve every ounce of success you will ever recieve. I’ll see you at your next show in Texas. I’ll be the drunk guy pestering you after your set, asking “did you start playing the Kilo is a thousand grams cover because of the Ghostface song or because of the original song it was sampled from?” Much love and respect to all of ya’ll.

  2. I was really anxious to read your response regarding the leak. Ever since last night when I got received word that it had leaked… I completely understand where you guys are coming from, and I really appreciate that there are still some genuine and authentic people out there, let alone artists. As a ‘die hard’ music fan, of all genres, I make it a priority to support my favorite bands in some way, whether it be through merchandise purchases, shows, and of course buying the actual record. It’s a bit depressing reading that you guys are not making as much as you should… I hope you realize that you deserve every single bit of success, joy, and love that you guys get. You’re my favorite band. I hope to see you guys soon when you trek back to Los Angeles. Love.

  3. Hey guys,

I must be absolutely honest. I downloaded the album. But I understand completely where you’re coming from. I’ve been a fan since “Waiter” and continue to hang on every word you guys say and put out. Yours is the ONLY blog I follow religiously.

I believe that you, John, and I share the same mentality. Yes, we download music, but that’s not what makes us “bad people” its if we don’t eventually support these artists that we’re doing the real harm. By downloading music, I learn about new artists each and every day. And now, I go to literally one or two concerts a week, and still buy t-shirts, vinyls, or whatever they might have.

I was once at a Born Ruffians concert (Great guys!) and as a Canadian I paid in Canadian dollars. In any case, I bought 33 Dollars worth of merch (One T-Shirt, two EPs (They were all out of LPs :( )) and he said “Just give me 30 and it’s fine” and I adamantly protested, citing the fact that one of the EPs only cost 3 dollars to begin with, and that I couldn’t accept a free EP. And I think that I (And I’m not trying to toot my own horn) said something that we should all believe, I said:

“Look. I love your music, and I think you’re great guys. I’m sure you can find something useful to do with these 3 extra dollars, because every bit helps” and I put the money on the table, and walked away.

However, while the excitement for bands has changed over the years, what hasn’t? Sure, it leaked, but it doesn’t mean by any stretch of the imagination, that I’m any less excited. Since you guys dropped the title and tracks of the new album my Facebook updates, and MSN screennames have been plastered with whatever scrapes of information I could get my hands onto. When you guys revealed the album art, I literally FLIPPED A SHIT. I posted that on my facebook for weeks straight! Hell, AS I TYPE THIS, I’m wearing your T-Shirt. (One of the two (soon to be three) that I own) Then when you guys whet my palette with the daily videos, I wanted more. More. More. And as a matter of fact, I pre-ordered the $75 package of the Vinyl, Shirt, CD, Poster, etc. the first day it was available. :) So yeah, I’m excited!

Now, as I said when I started, yes, I downloaded the album. I won’t deny that. And you know what, it’s absolutely fantastic. But that doesn’t mean that the day I get my vinyl, that I’m not going to spin it until I just can’t stay awake anymore. All three of your guys’ records get the most play time at my house. Either on my iPod, or on my turntable. I blast it in my car, show it to my friends, and talk about it online. :)

I know it must be a bit of a bummer (Read: a lot of a bummer). But it honestly made my week. It’s like an unexpected gift to me.

Now, if you guys could scrounge up the dough to come to Montreal, I’d be more than happy to buy absolutely everything you bring. And just give each of you like, 50 bucks just for coming. :D

Keep up the good work, and sorry for being so long-winded. :)
    -Matt

  4. I second the “50 bucks just for coming” offer. Hit up Cleveland and I’ll buy you guys dinner and a fucking purebred puppy. I don’t know how to address all that you’ve said, other than to point out that I am such a fan and admirer that I find it personally upsetting to know that any of you guys are upset. I realize that you tried to avoid making that the point, but this wasn’t a happy update by any means. So, I promise you all this: I will buy your music, always (always! NEVER stop releasing music); I will go to every single fucking show in Ohio and the surrounding areas, as long as it’s even slightly possible; I will buy more merchandise than I could possibly ever need; I will encourage every person I know to listen to/support/come see you guys; and I will always love your music. There are very, very few artists who have struck me in such a way that I still listen to them years, even months, after first loving them (sadly). I hope you know you guys are one of them.

    Anonymous//06.24.2009
  5. John: Short and simple. Your band inspired me to buy music. Music is fulfilling again. Thank you for dedicating your time to releasing more than a product, but an experience.

I definitely downloaded the leak and love it. But I’m even more excited for when my vinyl comes in the mail!

    Kevin//06.24.2009
  6. You’re music is worth the money, and it would feel wrong not paying for something so great, and that had so much time, and effort put in to it.. Granted, I don’t feel this way about all artists (Though I should) I’ve kept up with all of you’re studio updates, and Blogs, and Twitters, and I personally get the feeling of how excited you all were about this one, and how much care was put into it.. Besides, I’d pay just for the Artwork on that Album!

Sorry for the somewhat bad news guys, I love you all.

    Cal//06.24.2009
  7. it’s re-assuring and comforting to know that you have such a passion for music. in your bonnaroo post when you stated you were feeling nervous and excited about playing, it made me admire you that much more. it shows that you haven’t lost that spark and enjoyment for performing (unlike a vast majority of artists today!)

your fans have a colossal amount of respect and appreciation for your hardwork, and we hope you get the recognition you deserve! i personally have chosen not to download the album, but once i recieve my pre-order, i can assure you it’ll be on repeat for the next decade!

    hella love

    cheyenne//06.24.2009
  8. i have never downloaded and album for free. I think its wrong! but im not gonna lecture because people are people and they will do what they want. also i rarely purchase singles, with a good artist you can’t capture what they are about with just one song.

I am waiting until your album releases and it will be so much more satisfying to hold that wonder-ful album and album art that you guys labored to make. music is the world to me. the music i buy is the soundtrack to my life. and i 100% agree on the fact that best albums are the ones that grow on you. for example. when i first heard the blood brothers (burn, piano island burn) i hated it. i though it was screaming hardcore trash. but then i started to listen to it more and realized, wow, they can make some pretty cool sounds.

By the way portugal? you listed several recent album artists.
i don’t know if you forgot to mention kay kay and his weathered underground.
i know their album will stick with me for a long long time. start to finish i think its a master piece.

and of course censored colors is one of my favorite albums too.

    Joe//06.24.2009
  9. Just so you know, everyone seems to LOVE the album. Myself included. I haven’t heard or read anything about it yet. Maybe that’s a little bittersweet to hear, but really. This is incredible music.

PS. I have no money to spare. At all. But I’m going to buy this.

    .//06.24.2009
  10. anything bad*, I mean. I’ve read plenty about it.. all praise. :)

  11. John, Zach, Jason, Ryan, Ian, Rich, and Zoe

Southern California still shows their love for you guys. There has only been less then a hand full of shows down here that I haven’t been able to attend, but for the ones I do attend I come to support the music you create. I film most of your shows so I can spread the word of how fucking hard you guys rock and do as much street teaming as I can being a single guerrilla. I will admit I to downloaded SS and CC from the leaks but I was still there on those fateful Tuesday mornings running from Best Buy to Hot Topic to Amoeba Records trying to find the actual album and dying a little inside when the store clerks looked at my like a star man when I mentioned PtM, I’ve still be able to get my hands on all of your CD’s and Vinyl pressings (even though I don’t have a turn table I still buy them in support, and they make awesome collection pieces.) My girlfriend even made my little paper vinyls for CC because Merchnow screwed up one of our orders and I was getting ready to throw a shit fit because I wanted my (your album) vinyl Next time you guys come to San Diego and Los Angeles we’ll make you guys some food and give you a place to kick your feet up and relax. We know you wouldn’t be here if it weren’t for the fans (that just sounds really coincided when its actually put in type), but if it weren’t for you guys and your love of the music we wouldn’t be fans.

  12. Jeeze it seems like we all worked so hard for this thing not to leak out. My mega-advanced-advanced-advanced copy is still on my ipod, never seeing anywhere outside of it. Bummer that someone, possibly close, had to break the rules. So, whoever did it please make sure to make up for it in some way.

    Austin//06.24.2009
  13. Okay, I wrote a long reply but then my computer decided not to post it and deleted it instead.

So I’ll keep it short (sorta). I love this band and everything you guys are trying to accomplish and accomplishing. When my super $75 bundle arrives, I will play the vinyl and CD until they dissintegrate, then I’ll but them again. Thank you for making beautiful, inspiring music. And thank you for being amazing people. Keep rocking.

    Danielle//06.24.2009
  14. i had no idea that it affected bands soo much. thank you you for spreading the word. you can count on me for buying this amazing album, and every other amazing album that comes out.

    Joe//06.24.2009
  15. I want to tell you one thing that I’ve always found interesting about you guys. Since the beginning when I first bought Waiter kind of on a whim, I had always thought of you as an album band. I know that’s easy to say now, but you can ask my friend Scott (whom interviewed you at Bonnaroo, however that’s spelled) or my girlfriend Vicky. I wanted to show you guys off and I wanted to put your music on a mix to give to people, but I always had/have trouble.
Your music is so much truer to form than most stuff I listen to these days. When I try to put your songs on a mix I just don’t feel like I’m giving them justice. They deserve to be played in context; along with the rest of the album. To this day, whenever I’ve wanted someone to hear you guys, I give them a copy of an entire album. There is something special about your albums that I just don’t get out of other bands. I’ll admit that when you were slowly releasing new stuff from Censored Colors I had trouble getting used to it. When the album came in the mail though, every song I had already heard changed for me. The album was greater than the sum of its parts, to steal from a super lame cliche.
So long story short, I haven’t been listening to the samples/trailers the past couple weeks, not because I’m not excited, but because I am. I want to experience it like it’s meant to be experienced. I honestly love you guys, you always have my full support. I just want you to know that I haven’t forgotten what you guys are. You’re bigger than just a band. I don’t know how to explain it, but if I tried to, it would just cheapen it. If you ever need anything and you’re in the Richmond, Virginia area, you’ve got a family here that’ll treat you well.

    Josh//06.24.2009
  16. my friend and i were just talking about this the other day. we both concluded we have a strong feeling for that anticipation you get waiting months or years when you hear one of your favorite bands is starting a new cd, or has one done.
and when you finally see the mail man walk towards the house you can’t wait to run to the computer and put in the cd and just purely listen to every little thing about a new song you’ve been waiting forever for, it seems.

i always feel leaked albums are a bummer. i felt that way about brand new’s latest album, when it seemed like their new songs were common place before the release, i knew i had to wait for the real thing.
can’t imagine how it would feel for the bands. i know if i had a gallery opening set up and the opening was the next day, and no one had seen any of the work i’d done except the people involved, and then someone let a bunch of people in the night before i’d be so bummed.

well anyway, i have my copy pre-ordered and i can’t wait to hear it in july! i know it’ll make my day for sure : ]

    amy//06.24.2009
  17. One more thing, can I just say that the last song “Mornings” Is amazing, and sounds a a little similar to “The Rain Song” by Led Zeppelin.. Both are great.. the album is amazing, and is worth every penny I am going to pay for it..

    Cal//06.24.2009
  18. Times change, but the music remains. Always do what you love guys, it’s never for nothing!

    Brett//06.24.2009
  19. Also, I just listened to the album; it made me smile like an idiot and gave me goosebumps. I’m going to fall asleep to it and wake up to it now.
I was gonna wait ’til July 21, but I have absolutely no patience at all. I’m sorry.

    Danielle//06.24.2009
  20. I can only speak for myself, but I’m going to buy a lot of extra copies to give out to my friends. I could easily copy them on my computer for them, but I can tall that this album is going to be an experience that needs the artwork and packaging to fully understand. And I LOVE THAT. Thank you for making some of the best music I’ve ever heard.

    Landon//06.24.2009
  21. i feel so horrible i just deleted my copy :( im srry

i cant wait to listen to the whole thing when i get my lp tho :) u guys rule!!

    mucho love!

  22. I am downloading it(The Satanic Satanist) as i type this, I’m not going to lie i have downloaded all your albums, which is mainly based on the amount of money don’t have. but I promise that when this money arrives to me I will pay for every album just because you guys are one of the only bands worth getting my money for these fantastic sounds you fart out. Keep it up so one day I can make it to a PTM show.

much love ~ Nathan J. Staupe

    nathan//06.24.2009
  23. I wish that Bonnaroo would’ve allowed me to pick where my 300 dollars went, because if I could I’d have given $200 to PTM. But you can rest assured that you’ll at least get the 20 (or whatever it costs) you deserve for this album. I read an interview with a band talking about how they didn’t know if they’d make full albums anymore or just release singles on iTunes and I couldn’t disagree more. I need the artwork, I need the physical object, I need songs that are part of a bigger meaning…

    Ben//06.24.2009
  24. i’ve had almost 2,000 people read my review of the album, john. if every one of them buy the album, well then that’s something at least.

i know i’m going to buy the album. i’ll even buy a premium gold foiled stamped limited signed bronze dipped platinum coated jewel crusted edition…. if you’re selling one.

you forgot one section to your post: THE ALBUM.

the album is amazing guys, and if there’s only two albums you allow yourself to buy this year, it should be veckatimest and satanic satanist.

    period.

    …ryan

p.s. oh and if bon iver drops an album this year, buy that one too.

    ryan dunn//06.24.2009

I’m going to buy it, you have my Word, and my bow, AND MY AXE!

  27. Perfect timing. Except not… I was anxiously waiting for this album to come out and I actually did not want this album to be leaked.
So not so much perfect timing but a coincidence that I’m leaving for Chicago in a couple of hours.
That josh kid has got it right. You are bigger than a band. And that’s what made me stick with you guys in the first place. It’s not something I can explain either.

    ///06.24.2009
  28. Portugals,

I hope you understand that there is no way that I have the self-control to not listen to the most anticipated album of my life after I have the knowledge of its leak. You are the only band in a long time that has given me that feeling of being part of something bigger.

I am always on a limited budget BUT….. I just really want you to know that I am pre-ordering my ass off and going to every show that is anywhere near Michigan (including Lollapalooza!). thank you for the last Chicago show! You guys burned the motherfucker down!!! It truly was the best show I have ever seen!

I will always support the bands that I NEED in my life!!!
e-mail my if you ever need anything in Michigan!

    <3 Matt

  29. i’m glad i didnt download it after reading this, and i dont mean that in a douchy way (i download cd’s like a fiend). but yours is the first album i have anticipated but refused to download, not because i feel its betraying you nor being loyal to getting all your music, but simply because when that $75 bundle gets to my doorstep, its going to be an experience like Kevin said. Downloading music for giant bands you often listen to is one thing, but supporting your favorite artists means a lot to the artist as well as the fan. Thank you so much for being able to consistently provide great products so fast. Music is much more than the listening experience and by creating such amazing artwork, you make the music that much better. see you at Lolla.

  31. Great post John.

I, as some others have said, downloaded the album. Not because I wanted it for free, but because I’m just that interested in hearing what new music you guys have made.

So far, I love it, but even if I didn’t, I would go out and buy it the first day it comes out just because as a band (this will sound lame) I believe in you guys. I want you guys to keep making music, because even if I don’t find your new releases as appealing as your old ones, I still want to support what you guys do. It’s partly because maybe I’m waiting for an album that makes me feel like Waiters did the first time I heard it, or maybe it’s just that overall as a band, you are everything I like about one. Who knows, but I do know that I will be buying the album!

Also, when you tour in the states (soon, I hope) please come by WI. This place has been dry for months now, and the last time you guys came here I missed it, due to the age thing.

  32. i also have no self control.

but i know to give credit or money where it is due.

    come to texas already. please.

  33. I pre-ordered the vinyl a few weeks ago. I dpn’t want to be a fag and be all like, “I’ve bought this and that from you guys! hellz yeah! I’m Yo Biggest fan!”, but i have supported you guys the best way i know how and bought every album, like 3 shirts, a church mouth vinyl, and have told every true friend I have about your music and movement.

I read a post John wrote a while ago about being part of a movement so it doesn’t die out, and I really am trying to apply that to my life. I too am a musician and would love to make it as a performer, but it’s just so damn uncertain. That’s why I truly admire what you guys are doing.

Also, John is tied with Casey Crescenzo as nicest frontman ever. I met both at the masquerade in Atlanta. You should definitely both come back, but on tour together.

  34. Respect.. so much respect for you guys now its hard to describe.. thanks for this.

    luis//06.25.2009
  35. Ahh, I remember when me and my brother saw you guys at Champs with The Fall Of Troy and Tera Melos. You all have been my band since then. We exchanged brief hellos with you guys after your Metro show, and I tried to wait around after the Subterranean, but the youngin’s had to go (not to mention you guys were up the crazy staircase). I am hoping to at least share a word with you guys when Lollapalooza rolls around. You better believe I’ll be looking around for you.
If you’re ever cruising anywhere near Macomb, IL (WIU) then you know you can hit my email up and hang out on my floor. I know a few who’d be willing to partake in a drink.

  36. Well John, if it’s any consolation, the leak just convinced me to preorder that fancy bundle of everything instead of just the CD. I’ve had this album playing over three hours straight and love it more every time it loops back to People Say.

After reading through your post, I was actually glad to hear the album leaked ahead of time. This is an experience in and of itself, albeit different than the previous generations, but still just as glorious nonetheless. I understand your stance on the album being leaked, though remember, it is 2009 and it’s a whole new way of doing things with digital technology. Not necessarily worse like people are always implying, only different, so all we can do is adapt. Like everything else in this world, it’s a process of evolution. What resists it is what gets left behind, and what embraces it advances forward and builds something better.

Knowing your previous albums leaked, I had a feeling this one would too, but not so early like you said. And because of how unexpected this was, that is what made this album what it is for me. Every old album has had a release date, and now we have albums like this that are completely unpredictable. Honestly, I felt more elated hearing the album tonight than what I would have felt after building up a months worth of exhausted anticipation. That bullshit doesn’t work for me. All I can say is, hit me when I least expect it, and you’ll hit me the hardest.

Personally, I also find the best albums are the ones that have had time to settle. All this new stuff is way too volatile and poorly influenced by hype and mysterious expectations. Those two things have nothing to do with whether the music is good or not, and can only make it worse in my opinion.

I must say though, this is definitely one of those phenomenal albums that grows. It takes a while to figure out where you’re going and what’s happening, but when familiarity settles in, the extraordinary details really start coming into focus. At first, I hated this album more than I hated Censored Colors on first listen. But let me tell you, the more I listened to Censored Colors, the more appealing it became until it became one of my favorite albums of all time – and the same thing is now happening with The Satanic Satanist, dare I say even to a greater degree. These albums have this strange way of intertwining themselves into my mind and inspiring my life, and each listen always provides me with something new.

Thank you for creating quality music and artwork that has soul and goes beyond business. It’s refreshing and I’ll always support this band because I know you’ll always create something I can appreciate.
    -Travis

  37. I’ve already pre-ordered the deluxe package (I’m a sucker for a limited edition), and with it being delivered to Scotland I can expect it to arrive a little later than the release date (despite the £20+ shipping charge!) so forgive me if I get a little curious! If there’s an album I come across via a leak that I end up loving to pieces then I will make a point of buying it, even if it’s just the artwork that intrigues me! I have faith in the human condition that we all have that materialistic quality to want to possess little things like these, even if it is just to hide them away in boxes to take out and look at on occasion whilst still listening to the same downloaded format they illegally acquired (Unless of course they own it on vinyl which makes it sooooooo much sweeter [it goes without saying]).

    LiaMMV//06.25.2009
  38. Didn’t hear the leak, not because I’m a good person, but when I’m anticipating an album that much, I prefer to wait for the actual cd. And since I’m that far away, I’m gonna have to wait for my cd to arrive even more…
Don’t have anything to say, just thanks for the amazing music you make.

A big big thank you and lots of love from your biggest supporter in Greece (maybe the only one I’m afraid).

    Tatiana//06.25.2009
  39. I must admit I downloaded it yesterday.but of course I will buy a CD from you guys..like I did with all of your albums.
The bands what I love I support..and you are my favourite band ever…I have seen your live shows in Vienna, EU twice.I am from Czech Republic and I dont mind to travel to Austria,Vienna to see you guys and I also always buy your tshirts. :-)

    Keep doing what you do!

    David//06.25.2009
  40. I first heard you guys on purevolume before waiter dropped. I was hooked. I was still in high school at the time (aka under my parents jurisdiction) and when the tour came to my area, my mom was mad at me for something and told me i couldn’t go. i didn’t get her voicemail telling me she had changed her mind until the next day, after the show. That was such a fucking bummer. I wasn’t able to catch a show until the next summer. It was everything i had hoped for and more. We ended up driving to the next tour date and seeing you guys again haha. I’ve always bought your albums (be it already on my computer or not), but seriously:

The artwork on the new album is fucking beautiful. Your shit is so fucking cool, John.
The album itself is a beast.

I already pre-ordered the fuck out of this one, boys, and I can’t wait to see that sweet ass vinyl packaging. Get ready for a ridiculous tour when you guys get back, because I know that I’M bringing every fucking person I know when you guys come through.

    Andrew//06.25.2009
  41. I saw you guys perform with the Rx Bandits in the Sacramento area last year. Ever since I have been a massive fan. your music has inspired me to continue with my life and to do everything I’ve wanted. I will listen to the leak, but I promise, I PROMISE, I will buy the album. In fact, I’m working up the funds for your $75 dollar super pack right now. So I hope that pans out, but, if not, I will get the album in some other form.

    Casey//06.25.2009
  42. To add, the album is absolutely fantastic. In fact, I am staying up for the next hour or two instead of getting to sleep for stuff I have to do tomorrow, just so I can listen to it in depth once or twice. I love you guys so much and hope that you eventually get the credit and recognition your band truly deserves. We true fans will be behind you the whole way, as, so far, every album you have made has not dissappointed and every thing you do we will push. I’m so sorry to hear of your financial condition, and I hope to God, Allah, Cthulhu, whatever, that this leak doesn’t hurt your chances to continue with your work. I would do some terrible stuff if you guys split or because of financial reasons stopped playing and making. If that happens, a PTM fund will be formed. Anyway, we love you guys and hope that everything turns out alright.

    Casey//06.25.2009
  43. I am working for a major record company and I have seen so many great bands (newcomer as well as bands struggling for years) getting the chance of their lives to possibly make a living of their passion. If it fails (for whatever reason), they predominantely do not get a 2nd or 3rd chance. Illegal downloads do seldomly really affect the companies or their bigger selling artist but those who would have gotten a chance to prove their skills.

And saying that someone is not patient enough is a veeeeery lame apology, come on…
I am certain, that the band and their label didn’t choose the release date just to raise everybody’s anticipation and tax our patience.

I can only speak for myself and of course, some people may think that a person from the “industry” has to say things like that – but first and foremost I love music and I am a huge fan of this band.

I’m glad you guys still have the energy, support and love to go through those times. I’ll stick with you, my copy is already preordered (yes, I still do buy music of artists that I like and still pay for their concerts etc). Thank you so much for your music and all your effort that comes along with it!

    t//06.25.2009
  44. I will definitely buy the new album when it’s out. To be honest I didn’t like most of the songs on “Censored Colors” but “The Satanic Satanist” seems to be a mix of “Waiter” and “Church Mouth”. Great. Best Artwork I have ever seen.

  46. Here is my point of view. I’m a Vinyl Freak since long time and buyed mountains of records. Now i just started downloading music few months ago. I don’s know much about how to download music, so i mostly use one blog to download music they recommend. So i download lot of stuff from bands i didn’t knew before and discovered great music wich i never will found in the record stores. I still go to the stores and discover and buy stuff there (too much for the less money i earn), but for me downloading music is a good way for finding new music.
I also borrow cd’s from the library and copy it to my computer. And thats how i discovered PortugalTheMan! I just took the Censored Colors Album because of the artwork wich is great. And i was a fan from the first time i heard the record at home.

Now i really looking foreward to your concert in zurich, and hope you take some records with you. .. …

    Roger//06.25.2009
  47. Well now I feel bad about announcing that the album leaked here. But I DON’T feel bad about downloading because I’ve already purchased the vinyl bundle and also that I made it my priority to support you guys at all times. Well, atleast when you guys are within 7 hours of driving.

With your guys’ amazing care with the album itself, let alone the music on it, there is little to worry about not feeling the ripples of success from it.

I do wish though that the album had leaked on Portugal’s account and not by some random heb,

But the album is sooooo good. Every song has a part that I recall from a recent live show. Many of us have been following your guys’ every step for the past 8 months, especially with the twitter-tracking now, so the fans in alot of ways have been there right with you every step of the way on this particular album.

I’ll never forget driving 7 hours to see you guys play for just 40 minutes on an opening slot. And a lot of people have, I call that a certain bit of determination that certainly is a testimony on many levels. A testimony of you guys killing it live at every show and than being able to be so precise and groovy on album.

    Viva Le Portugal !

    Casper//06.25.2009
  48. There is not a single band recording and touring right now that I respect more than you gentlemen. The album is brilliant, I would argue that it is your best yet. And I know that the times haven’t exactly been easy, and I know downloading might have some bad after effects, but we all know it has some good ones too. With an album this great, people won’t be able to help listening to it, and when they do, they will all become fans(and hopefully fans like me who pay for the super awesome 75 dollar bundle you guys have out). Things are looking beautiful for you guys in the next year or so, I mean with the release of this incredible album, the fact that you are starting to play huge festivals, and lots and lots of your headlining(headlining!!) shows across the nation are selling out(Even New York last week, and i bet you guys weren’t expecting that). I wish you all the best and hope to see you soon!

  49. Don’t worry John, I love this band so much and I’m sure so many others feel the same way. I downloaded the leaked album, listened to it once and deleted it. Now I am more excited to hear it then ever. I’m going to buy the CD and I’m going to buy the vinyl. I love this band and want to help you guys out more than anything.

    Eric Peavy from NC//06.25.2009
  50. Wow, I’ve NEVER seen a band work as hard as you guys. I live in Utah, an In the last year I’ve seen you guys play five times (including a free acoustic set) and never had to travel further than two hours to see you. …there is not another band out there that would make that possible. I thank you guys for all you do. You guys are number one. I know you don’t do it for the recognition or compensation, but you’re about due for some, and after listening to the album I think you’re gonna get it. I hope you get it. Thanks for being the coolest band in the world… not an exaggeration. Can’t wait for my album to come in the mail!

  55. gotta add some more love! we truly appreciate all the sacrifices you guys make for us and the music. it’s beautiful. all of your albums and live shows are beautiful. it’s what bein’ human is all about! wooh!

I dropped 85 bucks on the big satanic bundle as soon as I heard about it! this has been my most anticipated album this year and when it leaked yesterday I just had to preview it. it’s been really hard to not play it over and over again constantly because I wanna wait until the 21st. it floored me though. its the damn JAM of the summer! fo’ real.

next time you come to dallas I’ll give you guys some air mattresses and a portable air pump. makes floor sleepin’ alllll the more comfy.

  56. As excited as I am to listen to this beautiful piece of work, I feel I only have half of the product at the moment. I am now even MORE excited to buy the album to gain the artwork to complete the story you’re trying to share with the audience.

    Robbie Kanner//06.25.2009
  57. i also downloaded it but of course i will buy it!
It’s a great album. I just listened to the songs i already knew from the previews, for the others i will wait until the album comes out.

i am a bit surprised that you don’t earn that much money, although your touring all the time and playing on bigger festivals. but i also think that you’re getting bigger and bigger with the next albums.
German critcs love you guys, and if they keep on doing so, people who are interested in music will hear from you!

    Daniel//06.25.2009
  58. well honestly I prlly would download the leak but my home computers are broken and being the good worker i am i don’t download things on my work computer…just post to blogs. I can’t wait to get my cd though I don’t know if I am more excited for the tunes or the packaging….prlly the tunes. Are you guys already recording a new album…you cats are crazy with how much GREAT material you release and how frequently…much love

  59. Sorry to hear the band news about the leak. I guess its a bittersweet move. I have always bought your albums and its literally not the same when downloading. I cant do it. Its a totally different feeling. My friend downloaded all your music and I was like “but its not the same, you have to buy the album”. I see how much hard work you guys put into all your music and I (and Im positive every other fan) appreciates you guys. Id be lost without your music haha

    Amanda//06.25.2009
  60. I’m buying The Satanic Satanist. I have always bought from you guys since I bought Waiter the first time I saw you and didn’t even know who you were. It makes me, and I’m sure all the other fans, feel good to know we are giving you guys the means to keep creating your music that makes us all so happy. You have inspired my sense of music as it exists today and have inspired me to become involved in creating my own music. Supporting the band is a small price to pay when compared to the amount of work and passion you have all put into creating true, honest music, while always keeping the fans in mind.

    Thank You.

    Mike//06.25.2009
  61. I’m one of the many people that downloaded the leak and enjoyed it, but what you wrote really reflects my feels well. There’s many people that download gigabytes of music and pay 0 cents for it. It’s sad, and frustrating to me because I’ve downloaded many albums, and I’ve bought every single one after I downloaded it. I love buying albums on Vinyl, and I love great packaging, and the way The Satanic Satanist album art/packaging is going to be is awesome, because I like to hold an album in my hands and it’s just the best feeling, especially a great feeling to support my favourite bands.

  63. this blog was beautiful, usually i dont read too many blogs if they are incredibly long, but this one was awesome. i know im so guilty of downloading music and i feel terrible. i was actually just telling my mom how bad i needed a job to buy some cds and then i read this. kind of odd if i do say so myself. this post was so cool because it was detailed and vivid in a way that everyone could understand. it had great things to talk about and it really was greatly written. thanks so much for this, you have inspired me so much.

    respect.//06.25.2009
  64. I agree with all the stuff you’re saying, man. I download constantly, but I don’t feel guilty for doing it because I go to every show I can and 90% of the time i buy one or two merch items, the vinyl, and ALWAYS posters (i have an extensive collection). If you download, support the bands in another way. Teenagers and college students don’t have enough money to buy every album that they want to listen to. It’s a fact. I listen to WAY more music than my wallet allows, but I DO spend money on albums when I can or when the band is really important to me. Bottom line: if you download music, go to the bands shows, buy a t-shirt, and buy the album if it’s an important album to you. There’s so much more satisfaction in holding the album sleeve in your hands or a cd case or even looking at a poster hanging on your wall.

    Terry C//06.25.2009
  65. John, I fully i understand what you are saying. I know this sounds absolutely ridiculous but I have never listened to a leak. I love waiting for an album and buying it. I just waited months to but the new Mars Volta and Grizzly Bear and bought both although they were leaked months in advance.

I’m even going so far as to not listen to the advance songs. I’ve heard “people say” but I haven’t listened to any of these previews just because I want that moment, where I’ve waited months for your cd/lp to come in the mail and put it on and soak it up. That’s what I did with Censored Colors and that’s what I’ll do with the rest of your albums.

Your note stands as a great representation of why we should buy albums and lists all the reasons that I still do. I love supporting my favorite bands and I love being part of that constructive and productive population that is helping art be progressed and created. Thank you for making music, and I will be supporting you for years to come.

  66. Regardless of whether it is a leak, pirated or bought from an online store, I always feel like digital music is so much less personal, less complete. It’s always about holding the whole package in your hand. The album artwork is an important part of the album, part of the experience, and bands, especially this one, don’t put so much into it for nothing. Itunes idea for digital artwork to come with some albums was a good one, but having a physical product in your hand, vinyl or cd, is infinitely better than a digital file.

That’s why I buy music. Especially from this band. Satanic Satanist looks like it’s going to have the sickest artwork I’ve ever seen. And I have artwork from previous albums autographs and on display in my room. You can’t get that with digital music.

    Nicole//06.25.2009
  67. I’m not gonna lie; I’m downloading the Satanic Satanist right now, but I’m definitely pre-ordering it. I will continue to buy your albums as long as you continue to make sweet ass album art. Btw I think you watched Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy with my brother once.

  68. John let me start with stating my genuine appreciation of everything you, Zach, Jason, Ryan and Zooee(sorry if I butchered her name : P ) do. I have been seeing you guys tour around the country for the last three years and I have been a fan since the EP with the 2 Monster songs and So You Know…great songs btw. I am a huge fan guys I really am and I feel like an Uber Douche telling you that I downloaded Satanic Satanist but I assure you we as your fans are not out to undermine you guys. I know some ppl out there jump at the chance to get anything FREE and I am not any different…except for the fact that I believe you guys deserve every damn dime you earn from your music. I dont know if you remember me or not but we have met a couple of times now..most memorably(to me at least) was in Detroit back in 2008 when you guys were with the RX Bandits and I asked all of you guys to sign my Church mouth vinyl(which you all gladly did btw and THANK YOU THANK YOU FOR THAT!) I have had People Say, Do You and The Sun for about a month now and I learned the guitar and lyrics and have been playing them with my group ever since to the complete and utter joy of everyone that hears them. You have to understand that by leaking and downloading your guys compositions we are not trying to steal but trying to SPREAD THE GOSPEL! I can guarantee you guys that you are building a huge fan following(underground or not) by playing these huge festivals i.e. Bonnaroo ect. I know this because I WAS THERE! I was there at Bonnaroo one row back from the rail rocking the house with 30000 plus kids loving life and falling in love with Potugal the Man! Every kid I talked to(whether they had heard about you before or not) loved you guys. And that is the key…any of your critics would be silenced if they heard your guys live shows…you simply destroy it live. Do not get me wrong I love your guys albums as well. Each one of them is completely different and unique and beatiful to say the least. Yet some people(ROLLING STONE ROLLING STONE ROLLING STONE MAGAZINE) just doesnt seem to get you guys. Idk what it is but the mainstream media seems to turn their back on your guys creativity. It does upset me because sooo many kids read the Rolling Stone and whatever they read seems to be the word of God to them for some reason. Now I can tell I am rambling and cannot speak for every Portugal fan, but I just wanted to let you know that we truly do LOVE you guys and everything you do(esp for us fans)! I will leave you with this: I think we should start a fundraiser for you guys or maybe start up a donation link on your guys website.

Sorry about the lengthy post a second ago but dam John when I see you spilling your guts to your fans it really cuts deep. You are an icon to many of us and to have to cut through the facade and actually b a real person(which sooo many musicians never do) it is really amazing to read. 75. John

Running a label myself, I completely see the frustration with something leaking like that. Luckily, the stuff I put out is so far off the radar that no one would care if it leaked or not!

Regardless, the main thing that people need to do is buy your merch. Buy the album. Buy a t-shirt. Buy the album on vinyl and enjoy it that way.

I am 100% in support of downloading as long as people are paying the band back in other ways. And it’s a shame that that seems to be lost on a lot of kids out there downloading things.

I’ve supported you guys by seeing your shows since the Anatomy of a Ghost days and will continue to do so. Have bought every album you’ve ever released (including two copies of Waiter as I overplayed it so bad the first time around that it was all scuffed up).

The new album is one of the best I have heard since…well…the last album you guys put out (which seems like yesterday, to be honest).

Hopefully it brings a ton of success. Cannot wait to get my pre-ordered copy in and throw it on my turntable.

The Rega P3 will never have sounded so sweet…

  77. Yeah, word about the helping you out wherever you are. You guys should just post updates asking for help if you need any. I realize that there’s the issue of pride and all that, and would understand wanting to avoid seeming desperate or reliant, but you know that we’d all be dying to hang out with the band. It’d be a more awesome experience for whoever gets to help out in some way.

    J//06.25.2009
  78. Yo, I’d just like to put in my two cents. I still buy albums. As often as my budget allows. I find it’s handy to have a backup hard copy anyways. What happens when you lose your shit. When you hard drive crashes? Then you lose everything. Probly lose bands. Forget they exist. When you have real copies you can look through them and be like WHOA THIS band! And then it’s like discovering them all over again. I only own one of your albums, but I plan on buying others. If you come to Toronto I’ll come see you and buy an album and shake your hand because I really do appreciate and (at least try) to understand what you do. People take music for granted.

    They shouldn’t.

  79. I get made fun of for buying CDs and it actually gets me mad. I try to buy any CD I enjoy, and I try to buy the best edition. Speaking of Tool like you mentioned in your blog, I searched for their Salival set and bought it for 44 bucks brand new. Everyone was like, “just download it, since you can’t find it”. I found it, and I was proud. I always blow my paycheck on CD’s, and when your CD comes out, I will be sure to buy it, if not, by then I might just buy that 1 year of Equal Vision stuff subcription for 100 bucks.

    phisylus//06.25.2009
  80. I have had friends access leaked albums, and I can see how artists can be upset about it, due to their hard work and great music and not getting any financial compensation from the people they work so hard to perform for. BUT I do always buy the CDs of artists that I really love and believe deserve the sales for their time, effort and KICK ASS MUSIC they give to us fans.

Rest assured, you are one band that I have grown to love jamming to, telling friends about, and supporting. Ever since first seeing you at SXSW (twice) in 2008, I’ve been hooked! I know I’m only one of a million fans, but I just wanted to say that I will be buying your new album.

    RJ//06.26.2009
  81. I must say that my heart is warmed by your comments. It is really great to hear that there is such support for the band. Don’t get me wrong. We know that. We see you at the shows every night. We know who you are. Some of you say hello and others do not. Either way is OK. We know your faces. It means everything to us.

I imagine almost all of you have heard the record by now and if you are like me you are smiling ear to ear. I have had this finished record in my hands for a long time. I am not lying when I tell you that I listen to it EVERY day. It is that good (also my 2 year old runs around the house saying “I am Johnny, play my song…all the people say” so I have no choice but to oblige)

I can tell you one of the hardest things this band does is wait. The day they finish the record they want to play it for you. I hold them back because there are too many things that need to happen first but we are working towards ways of circumventing that.

You support is everything and your offers of support and hospitality are wonderful. Still the most important thing you could ever do is tell a friend. That will always be the best way to spread the word about a record. So please if you think this record is as good as I do then tell as many friends as you can about it.

Oh yeah, don’t tell them where do download it. We will keep that between us.

    Overcome by happiness

P.S.: I will buy the album.

  84. I guess I never got into the ‘album’ mindset that you talked about in your post John. Maybe it was because when I first started listening to music, it was classic rock, and my dad already had the CDs and albums. The bands I listened to weren’t around anymore, so there were never any album releases for me to anticipate. The only way I found out about you guys was by downloading. There is an indie rock newsgroup on usenet, and I download dozens of albums a week and give them a listen to see who to check out. Well, one day a few years ago, I double clicked on “Waiter: You Vultures!” folder and I fell in love. I purchased the CD to support you guys, and every CD after that. In fact, when you guys were at the TLA a few years back, I was asking about the Waiter CD because my friend sat on my CD case and broke it. Ian told me to download it ;) I did buy that cool dark blue/purple polo shirt though. I’ve also bought merchandise and travel to every show that I can (PA, NJ, NY, MD). I’m usually too shy to talk to you guys if I see you before the show, or stay after, although I wish I could because you all seem so cool.

I pre-ordered the Satanic Satanist package and can’t wait for it to arrive.

you guys will get rewarded for staying in this for the love of music, promise.

  86. oh it’s already leaked, I didn’t know it until I read this ^^ well I just wanted to say that your music sounds so fucking awesome that I just must have it on CD so I always buy it. But sometimes I download it first too because it takes me a lot of work before I can afford to buy it actually (CDs are very expensive in Germany). I can’t wait to buy the new CD, mp3 quality is not good enough for your awesome music anyway and I can’t wait to hear the new songs. But it’s much more special if you haven’t heard the music before you hold the CD in your hands. ;) sorry for my bad english.

I tell everyone I know about you guys and practically all of the graduate students at NMSU art department in Las Cruces, New Mexico. love your music and its funny to be in the studios and hear everyone playing the same music. Keep playing amazing music we will do the best we can to spread the word! Thanks so much!

  89. Hi guys,

Coming from a small town in England we don’t really have a big fan base for your style of music, only I in a large group of friends listen to your music probably three times a week. I just want to say I admire your honesty and they way you explained your point, in fact, I probably would’ve still honored your point had you got really angry and called us all shits.

I downloaded the album earlier, and as soon as it hits the shops I am planning on buying it along with some of the new merch you have recently released, I also plan on buying Censored Colours. I hope this justifys my downloading and I apologise if you have taken offense to people downloading your music! Honestly, its just because we can’t get enough of you, I have recommended you to many of my friends and they really digg your stuff! Shame I couldn’t come see you this week coming as i’m going away and Londons quite far to travel!

Favourite song has to be Work All Day, its so goddamn funky!

Anyway, much love guys! And I hope you reap the rewards of this new album because you really do deserve all the praise you get and I will play your songs to my friends continually until they like you haha!

Thanks again for making such a great album.

  90. So true!

I buy every CD of bands I really love, not only because the sound is so much better [Highs and Depths - I love them!] but also the feeling you described that well – the waiting, the longing, the need to not forget your CD wherever you’re going to. Recently I bought a discman. It felt great! Mp3 are a means to an end without soul. Never would a deleted album cause me to cry like I did when my sister accidently destroyed my favourite CD [Silverchair - Neon Ballroom].

PTM is definitely one of my favourite bands in line with Nine Inch Nails, TV On The Radio, The Sounds, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, … I’m looking forward to see you at the On The Rocks Festival in Golling – that would then be the third time for me in Austria. By the way – your merchandise is GREAT. I Love the prints on your T-Shirts and will buy anotherone in July.

    Thanks for everything.

  94. I downloaded it.
I’ve been listening to it thoroughly.

and because of what I heard, I decided to pre-order it, along with the Majestic Majesty.
    I’m sooo psyched.

    Andrew//06.27.2009
  95. It really is a difficult topic. On the one hand, I hate downloading. I love beautifully packaged albums, something physically, not just a few bad sounding mp3’s on my hard disk.

But on the other hand I randomly found the Censored Colors leak (I didn’t know it was a leak though) and downloaded it. I loved it and had to buy the album – so the download got me into the band and now I’ll definately buy every CD you put out.
So IMO, it depends on how it’s used…

Looking forward to the new album, I won’t listen to the leak this time and wait for the release date =)

    Quicksand//06.28.2009
  96. this made me cry a little bit, because of how passionate you guys are.
really gives me a new perspective amongst materialism.

I’m curious now because I didn’t know about the leak.
however, I pre-ordered the album last week and there is no way I am ruining the moment of receiving it through the mail and listening to it for the first time as I leaf through the art and content.

I’m going to be honest and say that I downloaded Church Mouth after stumbling upon your myspace through The Photo Atlas and hearing My Mind.
I fell in love instantly and I am so glad I decided to download that day.
however, I still feel in debt to you because of it.

I bought censored colors the day it came out and I am proud of the fact that I didn’t download it. I love the packaging. I went to your concert. but I didn’t buy anything because I wasn’t too fond of the merch.

I’m going to continue to buy whatever you produce so that you’ll be able to do more of it.
I suppose I can’t demand you tour if I don’t help out with the funds.

on the downloading issue in general, I always download to try things out. to see if I’ll like it.
however, I will never download from Portugal again. I have no reason to. you guys are brilliant.

    thanks for the post john.

    SDFJALSDKFJ//06.28.2009
  97. Your band is the most creative and hard-working that I listen to right now. 4 years = 4 records.
magnificent. you were one of the band that leaded me to the persuasion that hype-music and downloading is weak and sucks, as a consequence I turned to buy only vinyl because it forces the listener to stay in contact with the music. I even convinced few friends of mine with your music to adapt the same attitude.
i am from Berlin and i am sad that you cannot come to this beautiful town this year (or will you in autumn or winter???)
Untill now I was not able to see normal shows of you, only festival shows and your gig at the “jaegermeiser rock-league” in germany…
the next gig is at the small La-Pampa-Festival more than 100miles away, but I´ll be there to support you…

    long live physical media
thank you for the post, john.
let´s fight music-piracy: you as the musician, me as the fan

ps: your Hurricane-show was my personal highlight of the festival, although it was less than an hour und there were other great bands like NIN or the mars volta… i forced friends who did not know you to join me watching the show, everybody liked it and asked me for some music… but i won´t give it them ;) they have to nuy it on their own

  98. Read this after hearing your song on Hype Machine.

I too wax nostalgic for the days of release dates making a shred of difference, but you’re clinging to a dying business model. Move on and create a valuable, monetizable product (maybe one that can’t be easily copied without authorization or consequence). You say live show attendance is increasing — great! Focus on live shows, focus on adding value that fans can’t help but pay for.

Pleading with fans to buy music is not going to work. Sure, there are 97 comments above mine with people who are probably enthusiastic enough about your music to do it, but if you’re expecting the rest of the world to reverse course and suddenly start paying for something they can get for free just because that’s how it worked in the good ol’ days, you have your head in the sand.

You can complain or adapt. One’s easier than the other.

Just downloaded an EP… will give it a listen, and if I like it, maybe you’ll see me at a show.

I’ll keep it short, this is the best album I’ve heard in years and I certainly hope you all get the album sales and recognition you deserve, I definitely pre-ordered the CD and Record, and I’m thinking about getting another version of the recored through Vinyl Collective. 102. I’m always imensely interested to hear about a band’s reaction to their album leaking.
I’ll admit, I download tons of music, BUT I totally understand where you are coming from. In fact, I really truly agree. Even if I have downloaded an album already, I still go out to buy it because I feel I owe it to the band in a way. Because they’ve made an album I enjoy so much, I feel that by going out to buy it, I’m giving them an official thank you.
Needless to say, I will most certainly buy The Satanic Satanist in its pre-packaged form.

  107. I’m from the Philippines. A student with no credit card or something sort of like that. I am also an avid CD collector. But i know i can never buy your album here because it ain’t available. There are indie releases in Music One and i hope yours would show there because sometimes the unexpected happens.

But mostly i got my taste of great foreign bands through blogs who offers free download (not legally) and websites like noisetrade, com (THIS IS LEGAL) co-founded with singer/songwriter Derek Webb from East Nashville.

My opinion on this is that i usually download the album first but if i can find an original copy, granting i love the album, i’ll definitely buy it. I did that with mostly those artists on noisetrade.com. They’re offering their albums for free download (or u can also donate if u like) but even though it’s legit and legal, i still buy the physical CD when i see one…

a great example of this is Derek Webb’s Mockingbird. When he offered the album for free, i grabbed it. Then a year later i saw it at Music One and i bought it and its not even on sale… :-)

  115. John,

I first fell in love with PTM while listening to the full album of Church Mouth at an independent record store kiosk. I bought it right then and there, and actually wanted to listen to the full album on the spot! But, I didn’t want to disturb the other patrons with my random dance moves. Anyway! I too remember the times of buying full albums, but I also remember times of bands PUTTING OUT FULL ALBUMS. Seems like today’s musicians are lazy, or only hit that one spark once and create albums around mediocre singles. You could buy a whole Faith No More album and know you were getting quality and brilliancy through every single track, and that is how I feel about Portugal the Man. I am waiting with great anticipation for the release of the new album simply because I know that every note of music was well thought out, well recorded, and brilliantly you.

So, keep putting out quality full ALBUMS and your fans will always wait with bated breath to hear the next moments of stereophonic genius.

    Yours– Elisha

Sorry about the leak… please continue to speak your peace… every bit of education for the masses on why to buy album, merch, and support the bands we like is needed! 124. The fact that you can put your feelings into words the way you do hits me hard enough. I can’t comprehend why a band with so much heart, talent, and depth has to deal with all the bullshit you do. After reading this I am even more proud to call you guys my favorite band and John Gourley an amazing musician in addition to all of you. Music takes money. 128. Thanks for your elaborate thoughts about downloading and listening to leaks and the loss in feeling if not waiting for the actual physical release date. It was a really interesting read, as was getting an impression on where you are living on the money you make through your great music and awesome live shows. It is a little bit depressing, of course, that you’re still struggling so hard, but I honestly believe it will get a better step by step.

I admit, I downloaded the satanic satanist a few hours ago and listened to it. I tried for a short moment to control my curiosity and wait for the physical release date, but I couldn’t, I’m sorry. But, I really love the new record again as with all of your previous records and again I’ll buy it, of course, as soon as it is released. It is a little bit short, but other than that seems to be one of the best records I’ve heard this year so far and there were many outstanding ones. It’ll surely even grow with more listens. And despite (or because of) downloading I still look very much forward to receiving the real CD with the booklet, opening it for the first time, putting the CD in the player, turning the volume up und admire the artwork.

So don’t be all-too upset about the leak, your new record will still be received in a very respectful way and bought and loved.

And rest assured whenever you’ll be in Germany in the “Ruhrgebiet” (Ruhr Area) again, I’ll be there for the 3rd time (first two shows were just amazing) and bring as many friends as I can convince to come.

Please just continue what you’re doing and thank you for all of it.

  130. Interesting to hear your thoughts on the leak. I can certainly imagine that if I was an artist who barely made a living off of my music, I’d be upset.
This was one of my most anticipated albums of the year, and I will admit that I downloaded it probably the very hour that it leaked. However, I promptly convinced my mom to let me borrow her credit card, and I pre-ordered the album along with a shirt – the album definitely deserves that.
If you guys ever come to southern Ontario I’ll do my best to be there along with a few friends and buy some stuff =D.

  131. Since my first spin of Waiter I’ve been a dedicated fan, going to every Seattle show I could make (apart from one when the Vera Project had moved, unbeknownst to me and my disappointed friend… that was a sad night) and standing in the front every time, enjoying the deafening but sickly sweet experience of your guys’ bad ass jams and 30-bpm versions of some songs (and by the way, why do you guys hate Seattle and rarely ever come???!!!).
I’ve been in South Korea for the past 5 months and will be here for another 5, and honestly I’ve been starved of music here, until I found secure internet to begin an avalanche of downloading (some artists at John’s recommendation). When you posted the first video on this website, that catalyst began a cultish like effort on my part to hunt down TSS on the internet. I searched everyday at least twice a day, more until it finally leaked, (Compliments on the record, I’ll offer my true expression of my feelings for the record when I’m back in Seattle at your guys’ show… or when you come to Seoul) and I’ve never been so anxious for a record to come out.
Your record has been a treat to play over and over again as I live and travel this city, and has been a gold mine of ideas for me to ingest and regurgitate in my own fashion with my acoustic guitar, alone in a giant city, because nobody here knows Portugal. The Man (besides a few Europeans I’ve introduced PTM to… I’m working on the Koreans).
Coming from a fellow artist, I understand your thoughts and feelings on downloading music (especially your ideas on community, which were spot on), and just as importantly, the logistics and depressing math that goes into the gypsy-like life of the touring band. Know I’ll be purchasing a copy of TSS on vinyl when I return, but until then, I’ll be playing the shit out of this record, which will forever be apart of my ‘Korea’ experience.
